Dear Friends from Latin America,

As you know, we work in a region that is facing great challenges in the
Internet in the coming years. These challenges include how to scale, how to
interconnect, how to provide users with more services/applications…how to
evolve. These are questions are not only applicable to "some" networks, but
rather to all the networks in our region and in the rest of the world.

Networks in other parts of the world have developed common strategies to
face these challenges through discussions of issues in a collaborative
environment. These networks in other regions attend regional meetings,
participate in discussions and learning, agree on new policies, and
establish connections (both socioeconomic and networking) with the rest of
the industry. Here is a list of major regional meetings in other parts of
the world:

- NANOG, North American Network Operators Group, 3 times a year (
http://www.nanog.org/meetings/nanog45/)
- RIPE, Réseaux IP Européens, 2 times a year (
http://www.ripe.net/ripe/meetings/index.html)
- APNIC, Asia-Pacific Network Information Centrr, 2 times a year (
http://www.apnic.net/meetings/index.html)
- APRICOT, Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational
Technologies, Once a year (http://www.apricot.net/)
- AfNOG, The African Network Operators Group, Once a year (
http://www.afnog.org/)
- AfriNIC, African Network Information Centre, Once a year 9
http://www.afrinic.net/)

Most of these meetings originated from the basic need to meet face-to-face
to discuss technical agreements. The most recent meetings have involved
industry/policy/business discussions that will shape the future of the
internet and the way networks connect to each other.

In our region, we also have regional meetings! LACNIC (Latin American and
Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (http://www.lacnic.net)) leads the
efforts for Internet development in our region, and they organize LANIC
meetings at least once per year.

Last year included:

- *LACNIC XI*, in Salvador, Brazil,. This meeting was a great success, with
more than 300 attendees from all over Latin America, discussing issues
related to IPv6, interconnection schemes, Security, Open Policies, and more.
- *LACNIC Caribbean*, in Curacao. This meeting was focused more on the
Caribbean and included many discussions of the network development in a
region that bridges the American continent and Latin America.

Both meetings were successful; people learned from other experts in the
industry, built new business relationships, and started to develop an
"industry" concept.
---

I strongly encourage you to attend our regional meetings and, specifically,
attend to the next LACNIC meeting in Panama:

*LACNIC XII - 24-29 May - Panama City*
http://www.lacnic.net/en/eventos/lacnicxii/

Attending meetings is the only way to be integrated into the "industry" and
meet other people.

LACNIC XII promises to have great presentations from leading
companies/organization that you should not miss. These include:
- Tutorials about IPv6, Peering, BGP, Traffic Engineering, the LACNIC
Registration System
- NAPLA - Regional Interconnection Forum
- LACTD - Latin American and Caribbean Country Top Level Domains
- eCom-LAC - Latin America and Caribbean Federation for Internet and
Electronic Commerce
- Network Security
- FLIP6 - Latin American IPv6 Forum
- LACNIC Open Policy Forum
- LACNIC Members Assembly
More information go to: http://www.lacnic.net/en/eventos/lacnicxii/

I truly believe that all networks from our region should attend to these
meetings. Sharing ideas and building relationships is the right way to
become more competitive and collaborate to build the Internet of the future.

If this would be your first time in LACNIC, please let me know if you need
any orientation.. and I will put you in contact with the organization.
See you there!

Jose Miguel
